RESVERATROL LINKED TO FAT HORMONE CONTROL
NutraIngredients-USA reported, on January 11, 2011, that a study conducted by researchers at the University of Texas has found a connection between resveratrol and the fat controlling hormone adiponectin.
Adiponectin is inversely correlated with body fat in adults – individuals with high body fat percentages typically exhibit low adiponectin levels and individuals with low body fat percentages typically exhibit high adiponectin levels. There is also believed to be an inverse connection between adiponectin levels and type 2 diabetes.
Dr. Feng Liu, Professor of Pharmacology and senior author of the study is quoted by NutraIngredients-USA: “The results from these studies should be of interest to those who are obese, diabetic and growing older.”
Dr. Liu also stated that more research is necessary to establish appropriate dose/response levels between resveratrol and adiponectin.
STUDY UNLOCKS RESVERATROL’S FAT FIGHTING POTENTIAL
On May 10, 2011, NutraIngredients-USA reported on a study published in the scientific journal “Nutrition and Metabolism” 2011 8:29 in which researchers at the University of País Vasco in Valencia, Spain found that daily consumption of resveratrol may reduce body fat levels by preventing the formation of fat tissue.
In the study, researchers fed a high-fat to two groups of rats: a group given high doses of resveratrol and a control group which did not receive the resveratrol. After six weeks, researchers found that the group given resveratrol had significanly lower levels of fat tissue despite having similar body weights as the control group.
The dosage of resveratrol used in the study was 30 milligrams per kilogram of body weight daily. The researchers noted: “It is important to point out that the effective dose in our experimental design, as well as those used by other authors, is far greater than the amount usually ingested by humans (100-930 micrograms per day), meaning that the positive effects of this molecule on body fat would only be achieved by the intake of resveratrol pills or functional foods enriched with this molecule.”
